Hānau is the Hawaiian word for birth. 
The Hānau series is based off of the stories ('ōlelo) about Pele the goddess of fire and how she created or gave birth to the islands. Lava and basalt are represented by the colorful patterning and the dark textured surface. These pieces are created using advanced and extremely time consuming techniques to produce a beautiful and refined sculpture.

This is a set containing two pieces, the metal base in pictures, and two light bases to light the pieces from inside the base. These pieces flow together like the various streams and rivers of lava which run down the volcano as it erupts. Each lava flow is hand carved and flows into it's partner piece.
