Hānau is the Hawaiian word for birth.
The Hānau series is based off of the stories ('ōlelo) about Pele the goddess of fire and how she created or gave birth to the islands. Lava and basalt are represented by the colorful patterning and the dark textured surface. These pieces are created using advanced and extremely time consuming techniques to produce a beautiful and refined sculpture.

This is a set containing two pieces. These pieces flow together like the various streams and rivers of lava which run down the volcano as it erupts. Each lava flow is hand carved and flows into it's partner piece.

This is a sculpture made of colored glass to achieve the pattern. After the pattern is made the whole piece is then covered in multiple coats of finely crushed black glass glass. After the cooling period the black layers are then cut, ground, and polished in specific areas to reveal the vibrant colors and patterning beneath.
